Coastal Carolina University is asking for assistance in reminding your graduating seniors about the Horry County Higher Education Commission (HCHEC) Scholarships. The deadline to apply has been extended to March 15th! All Horry County seniors who are considering enrolling at Coastal Carolina University in fall 2010 are encouraged to review the 2010-2011 HCHEC Scholarship Brochure and complete the 2010-2011 HCHEC Scholarship Application. Please assist our future CCU students in taking advantage of this unique opportunity for renewable financial assistance. The scholarship is a $2,500 annual award and may be renewed each academic year provided the student meets specified criteria. Our hope is to receive a minimum of five applications for the HCHEC Leadership and Visual & Performing Arts Scholarships from each Horry County high school. The American Legion Auxiliary holds a yearly Americanism Essay Contest for grades 3-12. Grade levels are divided into five classes. One winner from each class will be chosen. If this essay is judged the top at the State Level, the essay will be sent to the National Level. The winner at the National Level is awarded $500.00 plus a citation plaque. The essay theme this year is “What is My Patriotic Role as a U.S. Citizen”. 9 and 10 grade level: 450-500 word requirement 11 and 12 grade level: 550-600 word requirement The essay should be typed or neatly written conforming to the word limit for the class. Furman University The Emerging Public Leaders, a leadership program sponsored by the Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership will be offered this summer. The non-partisan Riley Instutue is housed at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. This week long program offers a series of experiences that enable students to become public leaders in both domestic and international arenas. This program is offered to rising high school seniors. Columbia College “Developing Women Scholar-Leaders in Chemistry, Mathematics and Computing” The goal of this project is to increase the number of women and minorities graduating with baccalaureate degree in chemistry, mathematics and computer and information science (CIS) from Columbia College. As part of this project, NSF is providing scholarship funds of up to $7500.00 per student per year for nine female students entering in the fall of 2010. An applicant must: Plan to enroll full time in one of the specified majors, namely, chemistry, mathematics, or CIS (A student who later changes her major into one that is not on this list will lose this scholarship). Have financial need as indicated from their FAFSA and confirmed by the financial aid office. Be a US citizen, or have national refugee alien status or permanent resident alien status. Presbyterian College offers a strong scholarship program in addition to its need-based aid program. In the fall of 2009, approximately fifty percent of the incoming freshman class received merit-based scholarships. Specific information on the scholarship program will be available in the guidance office. Admission and notification dates are also available in the guidance office.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha Foundation Scholarship: The ESA Foundation Board of Directors offers about 150 scholarships a year for deserving United States and International students who meet the criteria of individual endowments. KEY Scholarship Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union, HTC, and 104.9 BOB FM are partnering to offer two scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Horry, Georgetown, Marion, Williamsburg, and southern Florence County. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors seeking a four-year degree from either Coastal Carolina University or Francis Marion University. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years in the amount of $500 per year should the award recipient continue to meet qualifying criteria. The total amount a KEY Scholarship recipient may be awarded over a consecutive four-year period is $2,500. Additional information is available in the guidance office. Attention Upward Bound Members: The Claflin University Upward Bound Math and Science Program, also known as PRISM Program is recruiting participants for the 2010 summer academic program. The applicant must plan to attend an accredited four-year college within the state of SC. The applicant must plan for and pursue a career in education. The applicant must have maintained a good high school academic record and maintain a 3.0 grade point ratio while attending a college. The applicant must demonstrate leadership abilities. The applicant must need financial assistance. The application must contain a picture of the applicant. The amount of the scholarship is $1000.00. Five hundred ($500.00) per semester paid to the SC college. The scholarship will be awarded four consecutive years unless the applicant completes graduation requirements early. Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Mrs. Janice Marie Scott was killed during one of the three attacks by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was among the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon when terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the building of the Pentagon. In honor of Mrs. Scott’s commitment to the children of her community, the family created the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship in October 2001. There are several requirements that must be completed to be eligible for this scholarship. Each candidate must provide a 500-1000 essay focusing on “Who is your Idol and how he or she has influenced/impacted your life”. The individual cannot be a relative. Applications and additional information are available in the guidance office. Deadline: On or before March 31, 2010.
Myrtle Beach Marathon Scholarship This scholarship is for graduating senior scholar athletes who have participated in the Myrtle Beach Marathon. The deadline for submission is March 31, 2010. Come by the guidance department to pick up an application.
LORIS BUSINESS WOMEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is available to female graduating high school seniors who enroll full-time at a college or technical school during the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year. The 2010 award amount is $1000.00. Must provide proof that you have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale. High school transcript must be signed by the guidance counselor. Must provide written acceptance from a college or technical school. Must provide a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher. SC Black Caucus annual essay scholarship The South Carolina Caucus of Black School Board Members is accepting applications through April 1, 2010 for its Annual Essay Scholarship Program to assist needy African-American high school seniors. The $500 scholarships will be awarded in August to students who have been accepted and will be entering a post-secondary institution in the fall of 2010. The Horry County Schools Teacher Forum is made up of ten
teachers from across the district who, during the last two years, were named to
the top five in the Teacher of the Year competition. The 2009-2010 Forum, along with the Teacher
Cabinet, created this scholarship in honor of the teaching professionals in
this district who serve the students of Horry County
on a daily basis. The purpose of this
scholarship is to keep alive the educational goals of teachers who believe in
this as a noble profession and to encourage the best and brightest of Horry County
students to pursue this career. This scholarship will assist students who plan
a career in education and have firm plans to attend Coastal Carolina University
to enroll in Teacher Education. This
scholarship has been funded by the teachers, administrators, and other
professionals of Horry County Schools who have contributed out of pocket to
make this dream a reality.
